Build a sequence

  1. 1Open Sequences from the sidebar and create a new sequence.
  2. 2Name it after who it is for — "New inbound leads" rather than "Sequence 2" — because the name is what people choose from when enrolling someone.
  3. 3Add the steps in order. For each one, choose whether it is an email, a call or a task, and how long to wait after the previous step.
  4. 4For an email step, write the content, using merge fields so it reads as though addressed to that person. See "Merge fields in templates".
  5. 5Save.

Space the steps realistically. Four emails in a week reads as pestering, and it is the fastest way to be marked as spam by both the person and their mail provider. Days between touches, not hours.

Put a human step in. A cadence of only automated emails performs worse than a shorter one with a real call in the middle, and it also tells you whether the sequence is worth running at all.

Write every email properly before turning it on. These go out without anyone reading them first, so a half-finished draft or a placeholder left in the body is sent exactly as written, to everybody.

Test on yourself. Enrol your own address and let the sequence run a step or two. It is the only way to see what actually lands, and merge fields that resolve on your test record may be empty on real ones — see "Merge fields come out blank".
