Why it is worth maintaining. Every quote line, subscription and invoice is built from a catalogue product. Because the price and VAT come from the catalogue rather than from whoever typed the quote, the same thing costs the same everywhere, and changing a price is one edit instead of a hunt through open deals.

The other half of the payoff is reporting. A line that points at a catalogue product can be counted — how much of each thing you sold, to whom, at what margin. A free-text line typed straight onto a deal cannot be, and it is invisible to every product-level figure afterwards.

One-time versus recurring. A product is either Engangsbetaling or Tilbagevendende, and the difference runs through everything downstream. A recurring product carries a billing interval, feeds subscriptions, and counts towards recurring revenue. A one-time product is charged once. Getting this wrong on a product is one of the easier ways to make your recurring revenue figures untrue.

Products versus subscriptions. A product is the thing you sell; a subscription is one customer's ongoing agreement to pay for it. The catalogue defines what is on offer, subscriptions record who has what.
