Which records you can build tabs on
Custom tabs are available on customers, contacts, leads, sales, activities, subscriptions, orders, tasks, planner projects, jobs, support tickets, saved calendar events, and objects you have defined yourself.
On customers, sales, activities and your own objects, choose Edit Layout in the record panel. On a support ticket, choose Edit Layout at the bottom of the details panel on the right; the tab strip appears once you do, if the ticket has no custom tabs yet. On the other record pages, choose Edit custom tabs above the record. Add and arrange custom tabs there, then choose Finish editing. The Record tab returns to the normal record and its existing controls. Add a tab to a record page
Each record type keeps its own layout
A layout belongs to one type of record. Adding a tab to a sale changes every sale and nothing else: the customer card, activities and your own objects are untouched, and each of them has its own separate set of tabs to arrange.
That is deliberate. The tabs a salesperson wants on a deal are rarely the ones they want on a company, so the two are never forced to match. It also means you can start on one record type and leave the rest alone.
What is already there before you change anything
Nothing has to be set up first. Every record type ships with the tabs it has always had, in the order it has always had them, and that is what everyone keeps seeing until an administrator rearranges something. A sale opens on Overview with its quote, activities, meetings, contract, email and documents behind it; an activity opens on its own overview with meetings, email, documents and calls. Editing the layout starts from that, so there is no blank page to build your way out of.
What you can put on them
The building blocks are the same everywhere — fields, headed groups of fields, and whole panels — but what is on offer follows the record you are on. A sale offers the fields that belong to a sale, an activity the fields that belong to an activity. Put fields and groups on a tab and Add panels to a tab
The one difference between record types is the built-in tabs. On the customer card, on a sale and on an activity the built-in tabs are fixed components you can rename, reorder or hide but not rebuild. On an object you defined yourself the built-in Overview can be laid out too, because that record has no standard shape to protect.
On pages with Record, the normal record stays intact while custom tabs have their own layout. Custom fields can be edited on those tabs; standard information is displayed there and edited through the normal record controls. Calendar placeholders and private busy blocks are not records and do not expose the tab builder.
