The industry code on a customer
Two different things describe what a company does, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.
⟦Bransje⟧ is a label. Somebody picks it from your workspace's own list, and it means whatever your team decided it means. It is useful to read and useless to compare between workspaces.
⟦Næringskode (NACE/SIC)⟧ is the standard. In Norway and across the EU that is NACE; the same idea is called SIC elsewhere. The public company register assigns it, it is the same code for the same kind of business everywhere, and that is what makes "every electrical contractor we sell to" a question a filter or a report can answer.
Where it comes from
You do not type it. The register gives it to us, and we keep it:
- When you open ⟦Foretaksdata⟧ on a customer. The register's classification code is kept on the customer.
- When you create a customer from Prospect Finder. The code comes across with the name, the address and the rest.
A Tribe import also keeps the classification codes separately from your workspace industry choices. When Tribe lists several codes, all of them are retained.
You can read Næringskode (NACE/SIC) in the customer sidebar and add it as a column in the customer list. It displays imported or register data, rather than offering your workspace industry dropdown.
A customer with no imported or registered classification stays blank. Opening Foretaksdata can fill it when the register supplies one.
What it is good for
Once a customer carries a code you can filter and sort your customer list on it, and a report can group by it. That is the whole point: the code is comparable in a way the free-text industry label never is.
See Search, filter, and save customer views for building and saving that filter.
It does not overrule what a person typed
If somebody has already put a code on a customer, a later lookup leaves it alone. A lookup that comes back without a code never clears the one you have either, because "the register did not answer" and "this company changed industry" are not the same thing.
