Get a display onto a television

1. 1Copy the display's link.
2. 2Open it in a browser on the device attached to the screen.
3. 3Put the browser in full screen.
4. 4Stop the device sleeping.

What to run it on. A cheap streaming stick, a small PC, or an old laptop tucked behind the television. Smart-TV browsers work but are slow and often forget the page after a power cycle, which means somebody has to fix it every Monday morning.

The three things that make it stay up, in order of how often they are the problem:

• Sleep and screensaver off on the device *and* the screen.
• Full screen or kiosk mode, so no browser chrome and no accidental navigation.
• Power from something that stays on. A screen on the same switch as the office lights is dark all weekend, which is usually when you would most like a countdown visible.

Rotating between several. Use a slideshow rather than a person clicking between tabs: it has one address, cycles the displays you chose on a timer, and survives a reboot.

"It stopped updating." In order: the link was rotated and the device is on the old address; the device lost its network; the display was deactivated; the browser tab crashed and nobody noticed. Reload the page on the device before assuming anything is broken.

Check it looks right from where people stand. Text that is comfortable on your laptop is unreadable at four metres. Walk to the far side of the room once, before you decide the screen is finished.
